Mommy’s Got You: Shadow of Herself  is dedicated to my youngest daughter.  In January 2019, my youngest daughter was diagnosed with depression and was suicidal.  She spent 2 weeks in an inpatient facility, followed by months of out patient therapy.  The first quarter of 2019 was truly one of the most gut wrenching and also one of the most joyous times in my life.  During this most trying time for my family with my youngest daughter, I was experiencing the beginning of career highs with my art and my curatorial career.  Three weeks after my daughter was discharged from an inpatient facility, my first exhibition as the curator of the African American Museum Dallas opened featuring 20 African American female artist including myself.  I depicted my daughter’s shadow a bit larger than life to represent the vacancy,  Her hand is depicted life size to represent that despite what she is going through,  she is still in there fighting.  The handprints at the top of the painting reaching in are my handprints reaching for her in an effort to catch her.  As a mother,  I want and wanted nothing more than for my daughter to be whole again.
